Chi Omega Yours Forever

Happy Founder's Day to all of my Chi Omega sisters!

I'm so proud to stand here and say that I'm a Chi Omega.  I made the decision late in my college career to join this sisterhood and it was the best decision I made.  The bonds I've made, the experiences I've had, and the love I've felt is something I value so much.  In finding Chi Omega, I truly found myself.  I found the woman I wanted to be and had the love and support of my sisters on that journey.  I'm so excited that I have a Legacy to share my sisterhood with!  I hope that one day, I'll be able to witness Emily joining this amazing sisterhood!

Hot Damn!!!

Ok, I'm almost recovered....aka not really but I'm ready to post about my amazing weekend!!!  Let me first back track and fill you in on my past.  I did not have the typical sorority experience.  I joined Chi Omega as a junior.  I did not go through formal recruitment.  I was talked out of it the 2 years prior by my friends.  I lucked out and was friends with a bunch of the sisters and knew in my heart that Chi Omega is where I belonged.  I joined the night of Bid Day and I can remember every detail about that day.  My favorite friend asked me to come with her to the Bid Day festivities.  My future Big Sister asked for all my information.  My friend Connie officially handed me my pledge card. From that moment on, my life was forever changed.  Now many people say that sororities are for people who can't find friends or that you buy your friends.  Yes it does cost money but it definitely does not mean you bought your friends.  Chi Omega opened so many doors for me and helped me realize who the woman was that I was supposed to be.  8 years later, Chi Omega means just as much.  My relationships didn't turn out the way I'd envisioned.  I'm friends with sisters that I wasn't too close to during my collegiate years and sisters that I was very close to during that time, I'm not as close with.  But all of that is ok.  Things have played out the way they were meant to be I guess.  But that has never changed the way I feel about Chi Omega and the sisterhood that I'm a part of.

History lesson complete........Now on to the weekend!!!

One of my sisters decided to get the girls back together.  We all gathered together, caught up over yummy food and drinks, remembered the good (and bad) times, and created new memories together.  It was so nice to be able to pick up right where we left off.  You wouldn't have known that 8 years had passed since I saw some of those women.  We all fell into stride like the years hadn't gone by.  What it also did was rekindle my love of Chi Omega.  Being surrounded by these women reminded me of why I am a Chi Omega. It was exactly what my life has been missing.  I am so thankful to have had the time with my sisters and can't wait for our next adventure!!!

And what kind of post would this be if I didn't have a picture overload?!?  Just a few of my favorite moments caught on film!
Elise and I....lived together as silly freshman and have been sisters ever since

Chi O Mommies

My Rosie...she was one of the first people I met when I set foot on the USF campus. She was my RA, my coworker, and more than anything, she's my sister!
Just some of my sisters!!!

Me and Lizzie...we lived together too (I'm seeing a theme).  I just love this girl!

Higgs and Trow Show!!!  Danielle was the most amazing host and the mastermind behind the best sleepover ever!!!
I treasure every memory I have of my time as an active but I'm looking forward to really finding myself as an Alumna.  I can't wait for more opportunities to be surrounded by my sisters!!!

Girl Time Overload!!

This weekend was an absolutely blast!!!  One of my sisters planned a Chi O slumber party which, to say the least, was AMAZING!!!  I'm in full on Girl Time Overload!!!  You can only imagine what it was like to have 25 sorority girls in a house together who haven't seen each other in years.  Needless to say, I left the slumber party at 430 am (we hadn't gone to bed yet and I was wide awake so I drove home to sleep in my own bed) and got home only to get a few hours of sleep so now I'm EXHAUSTED!!!!  I'll recap everything tomorrow, after I've had a few more hours of sleep.  But I'll leave you with my favorite picture of the night, one of all my favorite girls!
I just adore my sisters!!!
Happy Sleeping!!!

Well I'll just jump on the bandwagon

I have been secretly obsessed with Jamie's What I'm Loving Wednesdays so I thought I'd take the plunge and jump right in.  You can call me a bandwagon fan...go ahead...I don't mind...it's true!  So here goes:

I'm loving that our NYC trip is almost here!!!!

We will be boarding our airplane at the wee hours of the morning on the 5th to enjoy 4 days of nonstop excitement!!! I just know that I'm going to fall in love with this city and never want to come home.  We'll have to have our kiddos FedEx'd to the city.

I'm loving that I will be sitting 12th row, center stage, for my absolute favorite musical of all time, in 16 days.
I can't believe I'm getting a second chance to see it in NYC.  If you didn't know, RENT closed it's Broadway run in 2008 and I was just devastated.  It has been the #1 item on my Bucket List to see RENT in NYC.  Now I'm getting my chance!!!

I'm loving that I will be spending Saturday night with my amazing Chi Omega sisters!!!  I can't wait for our sleepover.  It's going to be like college all over again!!!

And as always, I'm loving these people, because without them, I would be lost in this world:

What are you loving???

You can call me Iron Girl

Today was my 5K.  My girlfriend (who happens to be my Chi O Grand Lil) and I decided to run the Iron Girl 5K down at Clearwater Beach.  I contemplated running the half marathon but didn't want to run over 2 bridges so I opted for the 5K.  Plus Jess had never done a 5K so I thought this was a great opportunity.  I decided that I wasn't going to run it for time.  I need to start running for time but I wanted to support Jess in her goal to run the whole 3.1.  She tried to tell me I could run at my usual pace but what kind of friend would I be if I left her during her first race???

5AM came too quickly since I only went to sleep 4 hours earlier.  I got my gear together and Jess came and picked us up.  After trying to find a parking spot in two of the designated lots we ended up finding the best parking in one of the garages.  The trolley came right to us.  There was not a 2 mile line for the trolley like the other lots.  All in all, a blessing in disguise.
Looking good for 6AM...on the Jolly Trolley
Once we got down to the beach, we found bag check, dropped off our stuff, and headed toward the starting line. Once we got down there, we met up with another sister and her friend.  It was great to have a few more friends on the road!

I.Heart.Her!
I've never done an Iron Girl event before but it is so empowering to see so many women gathered together in one place.  There were women of all ages....little girls (who were really fast) all the way to a 70 year old woman.  It was just unbelievable.
Just some of the 5K women in front of us

The Starting Line
All in all it was a good run.  It was exciting to be there to support Jess, who finished her first 5K without stopping at all to walk!  I'm so proud of her!!!  Obviously, it wasn't a good representation of my normal running pace but that didn't matter today.  I'm just excited that we did it, had fun, and got really cute medals and shirts!  Here are some more pics from the race (it was my first time running with a camera too)
If it's blurry, we must be running really fast!!!

Keep it up!!!

Return of the crazy eyes....I don't know what my problem is lately

Can't complain about this backdrop to the race and a beautiful sunrise

We did it!

My very pretty Iron Girl gear
I'm really glad I participated!  My knee hates me right now (which makes me a little worried....any tips/suggestions for intense outer knee pain...it started 6 miles into my half marathon in Feb and has bothered me ever since) but I'm loving being active again.  And to be honest with you, I actually found myself enjoying the run.  Cue the gasps of disbelief.  I actually liked running today!!!

I made it home just in time to shower so we could move on to our next adventure of the day....Day Out with Thomas!!!  Stay tuned for a Thomas the Train-filled update!!!

Happy 116th Birthday!!!

I thought this posted yesterday but I guess I didn't actually publish it........

Happy Birthday to Chi Omega!  116 years ago today, 5 amazing women gather together and formed the most amazing sorority out there.  I am blessed and honored to say that I am a Chi Omega sister.  This sisterhood not only introduced me to the most amazing women (and best friends) that I know, it truly provided me with a place to feel at home and to be my true self.

I do not have the typical sorority story.  I did not do formal recruitment as a freshman.  I actually had no intentions of joining a sorority.  Yes, I always knew it would be fun but I didn't think it would be for me.  However, I was fortunate enough to be very good friends with a handful of Chi O's in my early years at USF.  Not until my junior year did I decide that I would join.  And I still never did recruitment.  I got COB'd on Bid Day (after all the festivities).  I will never forget Connie asking me for my address and handing me my bid card (which I have framed).  It was the first day that I met my Big.  From that moment on, I knew in my heart that I found where I truly was meant to be.

And even though I was an older sister in my pledge class, I never once felt like I didn't belong.  It was comfortable and familiar.  Granted my parents didn't understand it (and probably don't understand it to this day) but they supported it as much as they could.  I wore my letters with pride, just as I do today as I wear my lavalier in honor of Founders Day.  I couldn't begin to fathom why I waited so long to join the best group of women I've ever met (and probably will ever meet in my life).

Leaving my sisters and my chapter when I transfered schools was the hardest thing I've had to do.  But my sisters were there for me.  I still have a strong group of Chi Omega women in my life who I am so thankful for!

My husband doesn't understand it but I'm okay with that.  The love I have for Chi Omega is so strong and I value all that it's given me.  It was a dream of mine to have a Legacy and I finally have her. I can't wait to share my love for Chi Omega with her.

Thank you sisters of Theta Theta.  You opened up your arms to me and embraced me for forever.  I cherish all the memories and friendships that I've made.  You helped me realize and embrace the woman I was meant to be and supported me on my journey to becoming that woman.  I don't know where I would be without all of you!

I was in college before the digital camera craze so I only have a few pictures scanned into the computer.  I have loads more in photo albums.  Here are just some of my amazing sisters:

10 years in the making!!!

The blog is not 10 years in the making. You'll find out what that means in a moment. But I've decided to give this blog thing another try. Why not write down all of the happenings in our lives for all to see?!? Fingers crossed that I can keep up with it. Be patient with me. This is a long one. So drum roll please.......

Graduation Day has finally arrived! I cannot believe that its been 10 years in the making. When I graduated from high school in 2000, I never thought it would take me 10 years to get my bachelors degree. I was the type of kid who wrote off community colleges because I was "too good" for them. There was no way you'd find me stepping foot on one of those campuses. So off to USF I went, and LOVED every minute. I was super involved from the start and getting a job in the Marshall Center just amped up my involvement. I made lifelong friends and had the time of my life. Chi Omega opened its arms to me and I met the most amazing women and was a part of the strongest sisterhood. To this day, my closest friends are Chi Omega women. But as my years at USF grew, so did my extracurricular activities. Class became a distraction from my life. I had to tear myself away from my job and activities to go to class, only to go straight back once class was over. I had a bunch of credits but no end in sight. I kept applying to the CON but they kept telling me to take time off. How could I justify being a 4th year student with no graduation date in sight? If you know me at all, not having any control of this particular situation did not sit well. I knew I wanted to be a nurse. I just had to get into the program. So in a panic, I looked up tons of community college programs and applied at 4am one morning.

I will never forget the surprise I got less than a week later when HCC told me I was accepted and only had 4 days to accept my seat for the upcoming semester. Again, if you know me at all, change doesn't go over that well with me. I only had 4 days to make the largest decision of my life. Do I accept and head down the path towards the career I want? Obviously the answer should be an easy yes. But by saying yes I had to say goodbye to life as I know it. I had to leave my job, my friends, everything at USF. How could I possibly do that? Trust me, it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I had the support of my friends but no one truly understood what leaving meant. I had to start all over. And there was always the fear of being "out of sight, out of mind" which turned out to be the case. In my leaving, friendships that I thought would stand the test of time dissolved faster than you could say nursing school. The one person I thought was my forever friend turned out to be anything but that. It was all a devastating blow. I spent nights crying myself to sleep over leaving and wondering what things would be like if I never left. The regret I felt was overwhelming (and I do not believe in regret). Slowly, my new life started to evolve and I became comfortable with my decision and who I was turning out to be.

Through my time in nursing school, I truly found myself. I knew who my true friends were and made some of the best friends I've ever had. But the most important thing that came from my devastating decision to leave USF was meeting my husband. I believe that if I stayed at USF, I would never have met John and the life we have would not exist. 5 years ago I graduated from nursing school and my life truly began. I married my best friend 3 weeks later and we made our move to Orlando to start our life (and family) together.

Fast forward to August 2008. I got the itch to get my BSN and continue my education. I applied to USF's CON again and was pleasantly surprised that I was accepted to the Fall 08 admission, not the Spring 09 like I planned. Its funny how both nursing schools accepted me very quickly. So now that hard work began. I had to take online classes, which I hate. I had to figure out how to manage a family, a full time job, and school. Needless to say, it was a very hard work. After taking 2 semesters off, it was hard to go back for the last 3 semesters.

Fast forward again. Graduation day has arrived and I'm an emotional basketcase (go figure). Putting on my cap and gown, walking across that stage, hugging Judy Genshaft, and moving my tassle was the culmination of 10 years of hard work, sweat, tears, laughter, friendships lost, and friendships gained. How I kept my emotions inside is something I will never understand. The feeling of accomplishment is out of this world. And as I made John traverse the USF campus to take pictures at very memorable locations, all I could do was smile. Smile because I did it. Smile because I finally have that diploma (that will be professionally framed in an overpriced frame) to hang on my wall. I have finished what was left unfinished for years.

I was talking to a dear friend (and my old boss at the MC) on Thursday (2 days before graduation) and she said the most profound thing to me. She said that the struggle I had making my decision to leave, dealing with that decision, and dealing with the friendships that fell apart, was completely worth it because she could see that I was truly happy with my life. That she sees so many of us who have the degree but are still searching for the one thing that makes us truly happy, whether it be that perfect job or that perfect someone. And it was probably the first time that I realized that I was truly happy. Looking back, I would not change the course I chose. I used to long for the day that those broken friendships would be repaired but I've grown up and realized that if they were meant to be, they would have survived through all of this. I've realized that I'm not the one missing out. They are missing out on going through life with me. I have an amazing husband, two beautiful children that are my entire world, a job that I truly love, and a great circle of friends. And now I have that elusive degree from USF.

What more could a girl want????

Oh wait, now its time for a masters degree!!!
