Happy Birthday Princess!!!

August 13, 2009 7:43 AM.  The time my worst nightmare ended.
August 13, 2009 7:43 AM.  The minute our princess took her first breath.
August 13, 2009 7:43 AM.  The minute I was able to make my first sigh of relief in over 9 weeks.
August 13, 2009 7:43 AM.  The start of the happiest day of my life.

It's only fitting that this post appears at 7:43AM, 3 years after our sweet girl was born.  While I have many happy days in my life, no moment is bigger than the moment Emily was born.  Yes, it's even bigger than my wedding.  (Don't worry, the Hubs feels the same way too).  Waking up every morning for 9 weeks wondering if today would be the day your baby would come into the world, whether she was ready or not, starts to wear on one's soul.  I've never been so scared and so helpless in all my life.  But after everything we went through to keep our baby safe, we were blessed with a perfectly healthy little girl.  Our prayers were answered.  Our precious little girl was finally safe in our arms.

Three years later, we're blessed with such a spunky kid.  Em is a spitfire.  A daredevil by nature.  Truly a "take the bull by the horns" type of girl.  She's sassy and sweet.  Crazy and wild.  Loving and amazing.  My world is complete because of her.  To say that I adore her is an understatement.

Happy 3rd Birthday to the most amazing little girl I will ever know! From the moment I laid eyes on you at my first ultrasound, I knew you were what was missing in my life. I will never begin to be able to put into words how emotional your birth was.  I was almost in disbelief when they said you were perfect.  But they were right.  You were absolutely perfect then and you are absolutely perfect now.  You were our little princess from day 1 and you'll be our perfect little princess forever.  Thank you for completing our family, completing my heart. I love you more than I will ever be able to express!

Our princess the day she was born

Happy 1st Birthday!!!

On her 2nd birthday

When the nurse wears the hospital gown

I could win the crown for most obnoxious/paranoid mother in the world.  My pediatrician loves me because I pay him a lot of money but hates me because I am a pediatric nurse so I worry about everything.  But when it comes to me, I usually don't follow any medical advice I've ever received or read.  I am the worst patient ever.  Like today for example.  I've been having horrible heartburn/epigastric pain for a week or two now.  Do you think that motivates me to see my doctor and get my Protonix refilled?  Absolutely not.  Do you think it even gets me off my butt to get the Protonix that's in my medicine cabinet?  Definitely not.  I'm a glutton for punishment.  The Hubs gets so mad at me for this.  But I have to thank him for dragging me to the ER last year, practically kicking and screaming because I ended up admitted for 6 days, scanned/scoped almost from head to toe, with a trip to the OR mixed in.

This is a long one....sorry!

It was almost exactly a year ago, the last week of August to be exact, on a Monday.  I had been feeling kinda crappy.  I was having horrible stomach pains that were coming in waves. I couldn't keep anything down.  I just felt like garbage.  I had called out of work, even though I didn't want to and I felt bad doing so (I think someone had called out right before me).  I would call the Hubs pretty much crying because I hurt so much but that wasn't enough to make me go to the ER.  I finally called my doctor to see if I could come in.  I go to a doctor who I absolutely adore but they try their best to keep infectious stuff out of the office.  There's tons of old people that go there. So my doctor ended up calling me back to go over my symptoms.  It was either my gallbladder (my guess) or a wicked stomach virus which meant I had more fun to look forward to.  We decided that if the pain got worse or if I couldn't keep anything down after 4 hours of being NPO (nothing by mouth), that I'd have to head to the ER to get checked out.  So I managed about 30 minutes longer before the Hubs came home from work and brought me right to the ER.  We went to the local ER only because if I got admitted, I wanted my doctor to be my attending. {Side note.....I worked at this hospital when I was in nursing school.  I pretty much despise it and really try to avoid going there at all costs.  But I love my doc so I went there.  Plus she promised me that she'd consult the good surgeons for me if it turned out to be my gallbladder}  I get to the ER puking my brains out, with a mild temp, and a doctor who says it's definitely my gallbladder.  I get introduced to the lovely creation known as Dilaudid and we threw in a little Zofran for good measures.  But guess what???  My US shows that it's not my gallbladder.  So the doc admits me overnight to figure out where my pain is coming from.

Overnight turned into 5 more days. I was pretty much living on IV fluids, Dilaudid, and Zofran for that entire week. I had the lovely opportunity to drink a gallon of disgusting contrast for my CT scan.  I even bribed my nurse to let me stop.  I now understand why our patients put up such a fight to drink the contrast.  It's HORRIBLE.  My CT was normal.  I met my surgeon who is the most amazing surgeon in the world.  He was convinced it was my gallbladder but obviously had to rule everything out first.  I had a HIDA scan that showed my gallbladder wasn't functioning properly but it wasn't working poorly enough to take it out just yet.  I met a crazy GI doctor who wanted to see my entire insides from top to bottom.  I got to test out the effectiveness of Mag Citrate (it doesn't work for me) and the always pleasurable bowel prep for a colonoscopy.  All to come back just fine.  Well my EGD did show that I have GERD/gastritis but we already knew that. So on Thursday afternoon, my surgeon decided he would take me to the OR the next day to see if he could find anything.  But regardless of what he found, I was going to wake up without a gallbladder. So I woke up Friday, so excited at the potential of getting out of the hospital, just to sit and wait. All. Day. Long. Finally, and this is why my surgeon is the most amazing man ever, after eating dinner with his family and tucking his kids into bed, he came back to the hospital and took me to the OR.  At 9:45 at night.  It was unbelievable.  This man went above and beyond for me, because he knew that I'd been in the hospital for so long, accomplishing nothing, and would be there through the weekend if I didn't have surgery on that day.  So into the OR I went and I got discharged by 10am the next morning.  Without my gallbladder.  Which we later learned actually had multiple stones in it.  I guess they were invisible stones since they didn't show up on ANY scan I had.  Oh well.  It was out.  I was discharged.  And I was happy.

During my hospital stay I went through 5 IVs.  I turned into a crazed druggie when I was in pain and my nurse wouldn't give me pain meds because my blood pressure was too low.  {In retrospect, 80s/50s wasn't the best time to give someone Dilaudid but in that moment, I did threaten to make her night a living hell if she didn't give it to me.  Ironically enough I didn't see her the rest of the night after that Dilaudid dose}  I discovered I am allergic to Cipro, even if my nurse thought my IV was just blowing {hello you don't break out in hives and start itching when your IV blows.  It's an allergic reaction, friend.} I can testify that Versed really does make you not remember a damn thing, no matter how hard you try to remember. I also learned a valuable lesson that sending work emails while on Dilaudid is not the best idea. {yes I really did that} I hung over the bucket, dry heaving my brains out, every time I got Dilaudid and for about 15 minutes after but endured it because Dilaudid was the only thing that made me feel better.  I was the perfect patient to have in the nurse's assignment because I was NPO, could take care of myself, only called out for pain meds and zofran, only had IV fluids running and only 1 medication (at night).  I was the dream patient to have.

Being on the other side of the bed was definitely eye opening.  I had amazing nurses who took time out of their day just to talk to me.  It meant the world to me because I was alone most of the time and separated from my kids and my husband.  I looked forward to my nightly visits from my family but it was so painful to see them leave.  I had amazing friends who would visit or call/text/email to check on me.  But it was this week that I spent in the hospital that made me realize the impact that I might have on my patients.  If they could make me feel this much better while I was in the hospital, for something as little as a gallbladder flare, then maybe I do that for our families who are dealing with a more horrible diagnosis.  I wrote about this more eloquently here, right before I was discharged.  It truly touches on the up/down side to being the one stuck in the bed and having a complete understanding of why things are playing out like they did.  The Hubs was so frustrated through the entire experience, as was I, but I was the one who got it.  I knew why they couldn't just go digging in my stomach without ruling everything out first.  You should definitely read that post.
And if you want to read any of the crazy I wrote while on pain meds (it's actually not as bad as I say but I did update every day while doped up) read it here, here, and here.

What is your favorite Fall activity?  This one is hard because I'm not a huge fall girl.  Growing up in Florida, there really isn't a season known as fall.  You get Spring, Summer, and maybe Winter.  But I do enjoy cooler weather and it means that college football season is here!!!

Do you follow a football team?  If so, which one and why?  We're not NFL people in this house (sorry Becca).  But we do enjoy college football.  The Hubs is a HUGE Florida Gator fan.  And by huge I mean life revolves around Orange and Blue in the fall.  I'm a USF girl so of course I'll be sporting my Green and Gold for my Bulls!  We're both Alumni of our respective faves so it's only natural to support our boys.
Me and the Hubs at a USF game last season
Me and the Hubs at a Gator game last season (might be my favorite pic of us)
What is something fun about Fall in your area?  Well my kids school (where I went to elementary/middle school) always holds a fair in October.  It used to be the largest fair in the county but over the past 10 years its gone so far downhill.  Growing up, if you mentioned Fun Fair, everyone knew what you were talking about.  It was the place to be.  Now it's a lot smaller and not as crowded (or as fun).  Now that I'm a St Patrick parent, I get the joy of working the Fair.  I have great plans to run the Fair one year and bring it back to the way it used to be.

Fave Fall outfit staples?  Jeans (obviously), sweaters, scarves, boots.  I'm hoping to lose a lot more weight (I'm in a 3 month slump) so I might even try a pair of leggings or two (ok..probably not)

Thing you are looking forward to most about this coming Fall season?  We have so many exciting things planned for this fall.  Our weekends are filled with football games, weddings, and other fun things.

Favorite Fall holiday? Traditions?  Again, I'm not a huge fall girl.  I dislike Halloween very much.  I've never really been a fan of the holiday but it's the Hubs's favorite.  I don't know why.  So we'll dress the kids up and pass out candy.  But other than that, besides football on Saturdays, we don't have many fall traditions.

When the To-Do list takes a back seat

I love lists.
I love the satisfaction of crossing something off of said lists.
But I love spending time with my family more.

I had a very big To-Do list for this weekend. I was going to get every single piece of laundry washed, folded, and put away.  Grocery shopping was going to be done. The house was going to be immaculate. Every toy was going to be back in their place.  My book was going to be finished. My PCD for my annual review was going to be completed.  The Olympics were going to be watched...nonstop.  But as usual, my brilliantly planned out weekend turned into something a little different.

We did a pretty good job cleaning the house.  Most of the toys found their way back to their respective homes.  Some of the laundry got washed.  Folded and put away is a different story. {This should shed some light on the problem}  Grocery shopping eventually was finished.  I caught a few moments of the Olympics.  I didn't read a page of my book.  My PCD wasn't even started.  We ate out for every meal.  But, you know what?  It's completely OK.

Saturday the Hubs and I got to spend some "us" time at the movies.  I might have embraced the whole babysitter thing.  I don't know why I was such a crazy person before.  The Hubs and I enjoyed time with the kids over fro yo (well the Hubs and Em got real ice cream) and Hello Kitty spoons.  Sunday we spent the morning sneaking in a few extra hours of sleep before spending time together as a family at Church.  We ditched our housekeeping tasks in exchange for smiling faces at the Disney Store, a little Mommy shopping, and school shoe shopping (which of course took us to not 1 but 2 malls.  Gotta love private school dress codes).

While I'm scrambling to finish my PCD (it's due today), I'd never trade spending time with my family for anything. As crazy as I feel being out in public with them, I welcome the crazy.  I've learned not to take any day for granted.  And if today would be my last day on Earth, I'm happy that I spend the weekend with  my family, not with a bottle of windex and a vacuum.

Now back to today's To-Do list ;)

Sunday Social

After having a lofty To-Do list for this weekend and not really accomplishing any of it (I decided to enjoy life with the family instead of crossing things off that list), now I'm scrambling to get stuff done now that the kiddos are asleep.  So of course, sneaking in a blog post tops the list ;)

1. What is your dream job? I honestly have my dream job.  I'm a Mommy and a Nurse.  I never grew up thinking I'd be a nurse but I am truly where I need to be.  I love what I do and I can't imagine myself doing anything else.

2. If you had just won the lottery and didn't need to work for money, what would you do with your time? I'd love to work for Disney as a PhotoPass photographer.  The Hubs thinks I'm nuts because of this but I just know I'd love it.  I'm in love with photography.  I obviously love Disney.  But how awesome would it be to capture those special moments of a child meeting their favorite character, someone proposing to their love in front of Cinderella's Castle, or just having a dream come true?  I couldn't imagine something more exciting to do with my spare time.

3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I was going to be a Pediatrician ever since I was 5.  And I'm so glad I'm not a doctor.  I feel like I'm smarter than a lot of the residents that work at our hospital!

4. What piece career advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field? Don't listen to those people who say you should work Med/Surg before going to a specialty field.  If you know you want to work Critical Care, jump right in and do Critical Care.  I think that Med/Surg nonsense is just that...nonsense.  Do what you want to do with your career.  Don't suffer through a year of something that doesn't interest you just because someone said to.

5. Biggest Pet Peeves either in life or in blogging or at work: Life: people who talk on cell phones in check out lines, boring baseball commentators, people who can't push a stroller at an appropriate speed in public, people who walk on the wrong side of the mall (we all know that each direction has it's own side of the building...stick to the correct side!!!), skinny people who constantly complain that they're fat (just being real), hangers that don't hang in the same/right direction Work: people who don't help out others, charge nurses who leave before checking in with every nurse who's on the unit to offer help, when pharmacy delivers meds for a patient and leaves the previous patient's meds in the same bin, when chemo orders have things crossed out on them, a messy report sheet Blogging: no-reply comments (I want to reply back!!!), people who make a point to say "follow back" (I follow blogs that I find interesting, not because someone asked me to follow back), hard to read fonts

6. Biggest Fears: clowns, heights, not being a good enough Mom for my kids, my kids getting a life threatening disease (unfortunately I think about this one all the time thanks to my line of work), failure

Great questions girls!!!  This one might be my favorite yet!!!

A case of the "What Ifs"

I don't like regret.  I believe everything happens for a reason, regardless if we ever truly understand the reason.  But sometimes I find myself wondering what my life would be like if I'd made different decisions.
{Disclaimer....by no means am I writing this because I hate where my life is right now.  I have the most amazing family.  I get to spend every day with my best friend.  I have a career that I'm not only proud of but one that I truly love. And I'm surrounded by the best friends a girl could ask for. So don't think I'm jumping off the deep end, OK? Thanks}

What if I would have gone to school in North Carolina like I'd planned?  Would I have ended up being the Pediatrician I always dreamed of being?

What if I never left USF?  Would friendships that are broken today still be in one piece?

What if I never met the Hubs?  Would I still be in the dead end relationship that I was in, the one that was doing nothing but bringing me down?  Would I have always been looking for the right relationship for me?

What if we never had children?  Would we be traveling the world?  Would be feel fulfilled? Would we do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted?

What if Emmy was really born at 29 weeks?  Would our life revolve around doctors and therapy appointments?  How would Noah handle it all?

What if the Hubs and I really gave up on each other when things got really tough?

I find my mind wandering towards these questions when things get really rough for me.  But instead of dwelling on all the "what ifs" I think of all the amazing blessings in my life because none of these situations came to fruition:

I ended up at USF and had the time of my life.  I made amazing friends, had the best job anyone could ask for, and found my place in Chi Omega.  True I gave up on my dreams of being Jessica Trowbridge, MD (that's my maiden name) but I found my calling in nursing.  I had to leave USF in order to follow that calling.

In leaving USF, I had friendships tested and I learned so much about myself.  I took a chance on a cowboy I met in a bar and found the love of my life. I said goodbye to a person that was only dragging me down.  I had the wedding of my dreams and we started our family with a perfect little boy.

Our prayers were answered and we were blessed with a perfectly healthy baby girl after 9 weeks of tears, worry, fear, prayers, and emotions. Every horrible scenario we had prepared ourselves were just that, scenarios.  I survived the hardest and darkest time of my life.

The Hubs and I pushed our pride and stubbornness aside and worked our asses off to get back to a good place.  I realized that nothing is easy and we have to fight for what we believe in.  Fight for what is important.  And it's a fight I'd fight over and over again.

I'm constantly reminded how blessed my life is.  It might not look like the life I always dreamed of or planned out in my diary but it's the life I've created, the life that's right for me.  I don't regret a single moment, a single decision (good or bad) because it all led me to where I'm standing today. I'm standing here proud of what I've accomplished, proud of the life I've created, proud of it all.

My favorite quote from RENT sums it all up....
Forget regret
Or life is yours to miss
No other road
No other way
No day but today
